Internal Medicine
Internal Medicine – the ability to prevent, diagnose and treat disease – is one of the core strengths of our practice. Therefore, if your beloved pet is ill in any way, we are confident that we can help. With compassion, skill and experience, we at North Elm have the tools to identify any issues with your pet’s health and provide you with the information you need.
Oncology
Thanks to improved nutrition, proper medical care and lots of love, our pets are living longer than ever before. However, even as healthier lifestyles are improving the life spans of our companions, older animals face unique challenges – including an increased chance of developing cancer.
At North Elm, we are able to diagnose and treat many types of cancer, and we can help you decide what the best options are for you and your pet. Treatments can include surgery, chemotherapy and referals to specialists for radiation therapy.
Soft Tissue and Orthopedic Surgery
Doctors Mitchell, Sims, Coates and Tims are experienced in a range of surgical procedures that your pet may need throughout his or her lifetime – from routine spay and neuter operations to more advanced intra-abdominal and cancer surgeries. North Elm’s qualified professionals are also skilled in a diverse series of orthopedic surgeries; such as fracture repairs, patellar surgeries, and ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) repairs. Should a procedure require a specialized surgeon (or equipment), North Elm Animal Hospital maintains a comprehensive referral services to ensure that your pet gets the best possible care available.
Anesthesia
We take anesthesia safety and monitoring very seriously at North Elm. With the utmost care, our well trained doctors and technicians work to ensure the safety of your beloved pet during the entire anesthetic process.
North Elm Animal Hospital is equipped with state-of-the-art devices to monitor your pet’s heart, tissue oxygenation, respiration, intravenous fluid rate, body temperature, and blood pressure. Strict monitoring that follows careful administration of the most modern anesthetic agents help us to avoid any complications that can arise from general anesthesia.
Behavior Consults
At North Elm Animal Hospital, we believe that a well behaved pet is essential to a healthy and lasting bond between pet and owner. We strongly encourage all pet owners to start their pets on a course of basic training and behavior controls.
From the very first time you bring your pet to our office, our staff will counsel and work with both of you to make sure your relationship is off to the right start. We strive to make sure your pet behaves in the presence of other people and animals within your home, and we empower you to recognize changes in your pet’s conduct. We offer behavioral consultation at any point in your pet’s lifetime, and our training enables us to help you correct or deal with behaviors that may arise as your pet ages.
In-House Laboratory and Pharmacy
For your pet’s health and for your convenience, North Elm Animal Hospital maintains a complete in-house laboratory and a comprehensive pharmacy. Our lab enables us to quickly test your pet for heartworms and internal or external parasites. Furthermore, we can perform ear and skin cytologies (cell studies), view tumor aspirates, perform urinalyses and do organ function screenings. And because we know that a prompt diagnosis is vital to a speedy recovery, biopsies and extensive blood tests are performed and given quick turn-around time. Our on-site pharmacy acts as a natural complement to our lab, with an inventory of all the medications your pet may need to initiate proper treatment and to start feeling better quickly.
Digital Radiography
Radiology – commonly known as x-ray technology or medical imaging – is an important diagnostic tool in veterinary medicine. North Elm Animal Hospital offers state-of-the-art digital radiography that allows for fast, clear images that can be magnified and adjusted for greater clarity if necessary. Moreover, we are proud to feature in-house radiological consultations by Dr. Mike Metcalf, our board certified consulting radiologist. He evaluates radiographs and offers ultrasound diagnostic evaluations on-site.
Parasite Control
Parasite control is central to an animal’s and family's general health and well being. At North Elm, we can test your pets for parasites and discuss which parasites pose a risk to you and your companion. We will prescribe the appropriate preventative routine to eliminate fleas, ticks, intestinal parasites and heartworms. Top brands we feature include Interceptor ®, Sentinel ®, Frontline Plus ®, Advantage ®, Advantage Multi ®, Revolution ®, Comfortis™, Capstar ®, and Vectra-3D™.
